Message This left head problem is actually more subtle than many would think. The hesitation is liveable for a long time, but will bother anal people like myself. It will rear its head as light spark knock between 2500-3000 RPM. My wife didn't even notice it, but I could hear it and "feel" it. It happens very slowly over time. If you get up and go most of the time and keep up your RPM, you won't notice it as much as if when you are driving normally.

Nissan issued a new part # for the left head for the '91 models. This is where I challenge anyone that says the problem didn't affect all '90 cars. I made many calls to Nissan corporate trying to figure out the VIN range when I first found the TSB. Finally, I got someone on the line that sat on phone with me and helped break down the VIN ranges, character by character, number by number. After we were done, we were both certain that all '90 were affected. They had nothing to lose as the car is not under warranty anymore and getting a judge to force a recall on a '90 is joke at this stage of the game.

Why do some '90 cars last longer than others before the problem surfaces or becomes so bad that it is no longer not just as subtle nuisance?

-Driving preferences and conditions. Some beat their cars, some don't.
-Some have a lot of highway miles and take a lot less of a beating on the CAS/camshaft connection.
-Many '90 cars have rebuilt motors and/or heads. These cars are 15 years old now and many owners don't know what has been done to their cars before they bought it.
-Many '90 cars have replaced the CAS and keep prolonging the problem.
-Some '90 cars have aftermarket cams or have replaced the cams. This is a great less-inexpensive way to prolong the problem. Basically, you are back to ground zero and are starting over again after the left exhaust cam is replaced.
-The CAS is lubricated when it is taken off and put back on. This prolongs the breakdown of the camshaft spline.
-Many actually experience the problem and don't realize it.
